Acupuncture in Lakeland

acupuncture needlesAs a form of Traditional Chinese Medicine, acupuncture has been used for thousands of years as a natural way to relieve or manage pain. It also, however, can help to improve sleep and boost one’s sense of well-being. The primary objective of acupuncture is to help the body heal itself. Acupuncture has become increasingly popular in recent years particularly in light of the current opioid crisis.

How Does It Work?

According to TCM, some pathways or meridians run throughout the body which include acupuncture points. During treatment, Dr. Ison will determine which acupuncture point needs to be addressed for a specific problem. An ultrathin needle will be inserted into the appropriate location.

Conditions Acupuncture Can Address

  • Headaches, including migraines
  • Low back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Pain associated with Osteoarthritis
  • Shoulder pain
  • Stress and anxiety

What to Expect?

During the first part of the process, you will have an exam and consultation with Dr. Ison, who will tailor an acupuncture treatment plan to address your unique needs. You may be asked to wear a gown so he can access the appropriate acupuncture points.

Once the proper acupuncture point or points are identified, which may be far removed from the area where you’re feeling pain, an ultrathin needle will be inserted into these strategic points. Since the needles are so slender, the insertion typically causes minimal discomfort. The number of needles varies depending on your individual needs. After some time, Dr. Ison will gently move or rotate the needles to maintain the tension or stimulation.

Depending on your needs, an acupuncture session can take twenty to thirty minutes or longer. During this time you will be relaxed, lying still on the table. Then, Dr. Ison will remove the needles with usually no discomfort. A typical treatment plan includes a series of 6 to 12 visits, once or twice a week.
